We viewed Franz Marcs woodcuts. Then we learned how to make a stamp from linoleum and finally we printed our own animals.

Art in our region: The Blue Rider
In 1908 four artists came to Murnau to paint: Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Marianne von Werefkin and Alexej Jawlensky. They were charmed by the light and the beauty of the countryside of that time. Not far from Murnau, in Sindelsdorf, Franz Marc and his wife lived lived, friends of "the Russians". These artist developed a new way of painting, though everyone kept his individual approach. But when they were sitting together debating about art, the ideas were born that went down into the almanach "The Blue Rider" whose title is used today as a name for the group of painters that felt commited to it. Here a fotostory with some examples of the Murnau and Sindelsdorf artists':
Artist of our region: Lovis Corinth
One famous artist of our region is Lovis Chorinth, who from 1919 on spent his summers in his house at Urfeld next to the shore of Walchensee lake. Class Venus heard about his life and viewed reproductions of his work.
Art project: My Walchensee Picture
The students found out that Lovis Corinth uses paint deliberately and that the brush strokes are traces of a strong movement which seems to be corresponding to the artist's feelings in front of the majestic landscape.
To be able to relate to Corinth the students received a black and white copy of his painting "Easter at Walchensee" from 1922. Their task was to apply color according to their own appreciation, thinking of the thick layers of paint to be found on Corinths canvases.
Starting with a photography showing some shore of Walchensee lake we planned to create our own Walchensee picture, a lakeside reflected by the water.
We folded the paper - but not in the middle. Objects of the shore line were depicted using thick paint, then the sheet got folded and pressed to create the reflection in the water. The "finish" of the composition was done by adding missing parts while painting as usual.
Carl Orff, world famous musician and educator of our region
Two students Anna, grade 7 and Sarah, grade 5, from class Venus created a little booklet about Carl Orff:
Traditional motive: The tree of life
The following fotostory movie is about the universal motive of the "tree of life" and the work class Venus did. Not all media players will work - the free RealPlayer is recommended.
Vor 100 Jahren - Kandinsky, Münter, Jawlensky, Werefkin in Murnau

Matching our topic "Schlossmuseum" (Castle Museum) in Murnau opened a special exhibition in 2008 about the revolution in arts that originated from Murnau, a town close to Peissenberg. Here the later "Blue Rider" painters developped their dinstinctive approaches toward the landscape of our area.
